Beekeepers Looking to Boost Industry. The host for this show is Keli’i Akina. The guest is Harry Holm.
Hawai’i Island helps feed the United States and Canada with a unique export: bees, which are essential for the pollination of plants that farms produce.
In fact, beehives on Hawai’i Island supply three-quarters of the queen bees bought by beekeepers in Canada and one quarter of those in the U.S. mainland states.
But Harry Holm, president of the Big Island Beekeepers Association, thinks the island’s beekeepers could have an even bigger impact if Hawai’i County were to change some of its zoning laws.
On the latest episode of Hawaii Together, Harry Holm, president of the Big Island Beekeepers Association, joins host Keli‘i Akina to discuss the international importance of Hawaii Island’s beekeeping sector; how local regulations hinder the industry; and what a recently proposed Hawai’i County bill could do to help.
