How a 1906 Law Blocks Port Modernization (Hawaii Together)
Foreign Dredge Act of 1906 Needs Reform. The host for this show is Keli’i Akina. The guest is Brad Tomosovic.
The supply-chain disruptions that occurred in 2020 and 2021 highlighted just how important U.S. ports are to everyday life. Essential goods such as food and toilet paper must be delivered on time and on budget or life as we know it will grind to a halt.
Unfortunately, various federal laws make U.S. ports less efficient, which affects the price of goods for consumers and international competitiveness for the U.S. maritime industry.
One such law, the 1906 Foreign Dredge Act, makes it harder to deepen ports and perform basic maintenance.
Brad Tomosovic, national high school debate champion, discusses the Foreign Dredge Act in depth on today’s episode of Hawaii Together. Interviewed by host Keli’i Akina, Tomosovic discusses the origins of the law, how the law harms U.S. ports, and ways the law could be reformed.
