On Promoting Local Foods in Hawaii (Hawaii Together)
Removing Barriers is Key to Growth. The host for this show is Keli’i Akina. The guest is Meagan Forbes.
Increasing local food production is at the heart of Hawaii’s push for a more diversified economy. The state has used numerous strategies to achieve that goal, but with mixed success.
So how can island lawmakers best promote local food businesses?
Deregulating mom and pop or ‘cottage’ food businesses might help. Right now, home-based cottage food businesses are often regulated the same as commercial restaurants and food processors. This creates a burden for anyone looking to diversify their income by selling homemade food.
On today’s episode of ‘Hawaii Together,’ Meagan Forbes, senior legislative counsel for the public interest law firm Institute for Justice, makes the case for promoting cottage foods.
She joins host Keli’i Akina, president and CEO of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, to discuss how a bill currently being considered at the Legislature might help more small businesses succeed and diversify Hawaii’s economy.
