Why Hawaii Should Abolish Zoning (Hawaii Together)
New Book Addresses Important Questions. The host for this show is Joe Kent. The guest is Nolan Gray.
Why do cities use zoning? Is it to protect people from noisy neighbors or maintain community character? Does zoning have any downsides?
Nolan Gray, a former city planner and currently research director for California YIMBY answers these provocative questions in his new book ‘Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It.’
Published by Island Press, the book argues that zoning has contributed to debilitating housing shortages, stunted growth and innovation, persistent racial and economic segregation and car-dependent development.
On today’s episode of ‘Hawaii Together,’ host Joe Kent, executive vice president of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, speaks with Gray about his new book, his experience with city planning and what to do about zoning.
