How Churches Can Help Provide Housing. The host for this show is Ted Kefalas. The guest is Joshua Hayashi.
California recently enacted a ‘Yes, in God’s backyard’ law to make it easier for nonprofit religious and educational institutions to build housing on their lands. A similar bill was approved unanimously by the Hawai’i Senate in the 2023 legislative session, but it died in the House. Would such a law really help fix Hawaii’s housing shortage?
The Rev. Joshua Hayashi thinks so. Hayashi is CEO of the Mission Management Co., which helps churches achieve their congregational goals through housing or other community-oriented structures. He joins Hawaii Together host Ted Kefalas to share the challenges churches face when trying to build on their own lands, and how a ‘Yes, in God’s backyard’ law could simplify the process for them.
