Parking Reform Could Boost Housing Stock (Hawaii Together)
Outdated Zoning Mandates Need to Go. The host for this show is Keli’i Akina. The guest is Tony Jordan.
Hawaii’s housing crisis must be tackled with a multi-pronged strategy, but zoning codes that mandate a minimum number of parking spaces for each new house or building should be high on the list of reforms.
Tony Jordan, president of the Parking Reform Network, argues that these parking minimums increase housing and construction prices and lower the economic productivity of urban areas. Parking minimums also distort what few people realize exists — a market for parking.
Jordan joins host Keli’i Akina, president and CEO of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, on today’s episode of ‘Hawaii Together’ to discuss the ways parking minimums cause problems for the housing market and how citizens, research groups and housing advocates can partner to change them.
