Politics of Condo Building Safety (What Now America)
Condo Building Code Enforcement in Focus. The host for this episode is Tim Apicella. The guests for this episode are Jay Fidell, Winston Welch and Stephanie Dalton.
The building collapse of the Miami, Surfside Condo and tragic loss of life not only brings up questions of local building codes and inspection issues, but will have nationwide ramifications as well. Many condos around the country are approaching their 50th year mark. Building codes were far different then versus today’s codes for structural integrity, especially for those condos located in earthquake zones. The politics of how city/county governments address how well condos are maintained or how they are to be kept structurally sound is not an easy one. It usually comes down to money, the money to pay for government staff to inspect buildings, enforcement of code, and follow up oversight. Also, the money required from condo association owners to pay for needed maintenance repairs or expensive replacement of critical structural building components.
