Delta Variant Creates New Concerns. With over 600,000 dead Americans since March 2020, COVID19 will most likely infect and kill more Americans, especially those who reside in red states where vaccinations are well below 35%.
The Delta variant, B.1.617.2, has been described as COVID on steroids, and due to its increased transmissibility, most likely be the dominate variant globally. Increased cases in the UK and Portugal have forced governments to delay the lifting of pandemic measures, and reimplement lockdown measures. France, Germany, and Spain are closely monitoring for clusters of infection directly related to this variant. With roughly 150M Americans vaccinated, 45.1% as of June 20, the most vaccinated states are in the north east. An AP poll found in late March that 36% of Republicans will avoid vaccinations vs 12% of Democrats. With a 600K death toll, how many more lives will Delta take and why should it happen in the USA when a preventative vaccine which is 88% effective is available now?
