A Winning Team (Hawaii: State Of Clean Energy)
Batteries and Fuel Cells. The host for this show is Mitch Ewan. The guest is Toby Kinkaid.
True decarbonization means ‘NO CARBON’. There are two types of electric vehicle (EV). Most people only hear about the Battery EV (BEV) that must be externally charged using the electrical grid. The other EV generates electricity onboard the vehicle using hydrogen Fuel Cells (FCEV).
To decarbonize transportation there are three choices: stationary onsite Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers for BEVs, and clean/green hydrogen dispensers for FCEVs. An integrated solution combines both clean hydrogen and grid independent DC Fast Charging using high power stationary onsite fuel cells – a winning team.
This episode introduces several infrastructure options using solar energy as the primary energy source. It compares fueling and charging options for a given base ‘Use-Case’: a fleet of 100 cars that each travel 600 miles per month. That’s 60,000 miles the fleet manager must find a charging solution for. Which one is best? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach?
