President Donald Trump is making good on his promise to his voting constituency that he will “make America great again” – by investing in the “old” economy – that made America great. By slapping a 25% tariff on imported steel, Trump signaled his making good on a promise to bring back jobs to the steel industry. Is he on the right road to making America great again? There is a quiet talk in Washington D.C. these recent days that President Trump is now considering even more sanctions —-restricting visas for Chinese visitors and business citizens – including students – as part of a soon to be delivered package of tariffs and investment restrictions against China. This includes limiting the number of study and work visas for Chinese citizens and ending a popular program allowing frequent travelers to the U.S. to get visas that last 10 years. Trump has already signaled out China – and this time not just the government—its people. While visa changes are being considered and yet to be policy, the U.S. higher education industry is up at arms — standing to lose $ 12 billion each year. The collateral damage can be even greater – an anti-Chinese sentiment is making many more Chinese tekkies who are legitimately studying or working and contributing at “making America great (not again, but now) in technological innovation industries (such as artificial intelligence) to consider leaving the U.S. to return to China. Imagine if even a small percentage of these tekkies (eg. 8% of the U.S. artificial intelligence industry are Chinese — that’s 68,000) return to their native China? Is Trump on the right road to “making America great again”? One Road, Wrong Turn, maybe.
