Community Resilience Hubs (Hawaii: State Of Clean Energy)
Bouncing Back from Disaster. The host for this show is Mitch Ewan. The guest is Adam Strubeck.
The episode introduces the concept of ‘Resilience Hubs’ in local communities to mitigate the impact of disasters such as storms, floods, and yes, top of mind these days, wildfires. Resilience is important for a community’s ability to bounce back from a disaster. This is of particular importance to Hawai’i given that the closest US port from which we can get supplies is 2,500 miles away. Hawai’i is not food or energy self-sufficient with only enough food for 5 to 7 days. A resilience hub is like a community center, a place to gather, hold events, and seek shelter in an emergency. It acts as a standard community center in normal times but has the capacity to increase community resilience during emergencies with clean power, a microgrid, food and water storage, emergency supplies, and communications. Each resilience hub is unique to the community it serves.
