Bollywood Dance at University Hawaii (Community Matters)
Coping with Covid in Indian Dance. The host for this episode is Jay Fidell. The guest for this episode is Sai Bhatawadekar.
Sai Bhatawadekar (Director, Center for South Asian Studies, University of Hawaii) talks about how the profession of dance has to rethink its performance and teaching practices during COVID isolation, and how dance, in turn, can help cope with these difficult times. In this interview she talks about her own Bollywood dance teaching in Hawaii before and during COVID and also talks about her latest interview with Astad Deboo – a renowned dancer-choreographer from India who combines Indian classical dance forms with contemporary dance – on his new project “Boundaries” dedicated to migrant workers. Bhatawadekar herself is a dancer, choreographer, and a Bollywood cinema scholar. She produces and directs Bollywood and Indian folk dance concerts at UH and at Honolulu Museum of Art and offers free community classes for all. Her work also includes cross-cultural (German-Indian) philosophy of religion.
