University of Hawaii Theatre – Jessica Jacob
Theatre alumna Jessica Jacob (MFA 2006) returned to UHM to fill the position of Theatre Manager/Public Information for the UHM Department of Theatre + Dance in 2015. Prior to that, she was the Executive and Artistic Director for Alaska Theatre of Youth (ATY), where she produced approximately 60 fully staged shows, 15 camps, and more than 48 multi-day workshops for youth actors in a little over 5 years. Concurrently, she freelanced as an adjunct professor of acting, stage combat and aerial arts at University of Alaska Anchorage and as a stage combat choreographer (and aerialist) state-wide. She also directed mainstage shows for UAA Department of Theatre & Dance, ATY, and in commercial/community theatre. Her earlier posts in arts administration included the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra and the Alaska State Council on the Arts’ Arts in Education and Artists in Schools programs.
Jessica holds an M.F.A. in Performance – Asian Theatre emphasis from the University of Hawaii Manoa specializing in martial style Chinese Opera, Kabuki and Randai (an Indonesian martial theatre form) and completed her undergraduate studies in art and theatre at the University of Vermont. An active participant in theatrical combat since 1995, she promotes actor conditioning for the stage and has been a fitness and dance/movement instructor. Prior to her return to the island, she provided fight choreography and direction for Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska, Fairbanks Shakespeare, Anchorage Opera, University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Theatre of Youth and more. As a performer, Jessica has appeared on stage in Alaska, Hawaii, Vermont, Japan, Taiwan, Belgium, the Netherlands. An advocate of “higher” education, she was the faculty point-person for UAA Theatre’s Fallen in spring of 2009, a full-length show integrating theatre and aerial acrobatics, and was able to study aerial acrobatics in residency with the Aerial Angels of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
