The Reawakening of Japanese Nationalism

Why is it that China and Korea cannot seem to get over the past events of WW II in terms of their anti-Japanese rhetoric?

Japan has suffered a nearly 2-generation (“lost”) economic malaise coupled with a demographic collapse and the blockbuster Tohoku/Fukushima disaster. We see a new rise in the country’s optimism as well as its nationalism. Is it real? Where does it come from? Is it a reaction to anti-Japanese demonstrations abroad? Should this new nationalism be lauded as a barometer of a coming recovery on several fronts: economic, national psyche, world stature, world player, stronger ally, etc.? Is Japan’s new nationalism interfering with or blocking solutions to its island disputes with China and Korea? What is the end game for Japan’s nationalism? Does it help or hurt the country in the long run?

This “Asia in Review” program features as special guests and Japan experts to answer these and other fascinating questions:

Dr. Yoichiro Sato, Professor at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University from Beppu, Japan

Dr. Jeffrey W. Hornung, an Associate Professor with the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies and an adjunct Fellow with the Office of the Japan Chair for the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

Dr. David Fouse, a Professor of Regional Studies focusing on Northeast Asian security issues with a special concentration on Japan also with the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu.
