The Pandemic and Children’s Mental Health (The Creative Life)
Pandemic Mental Health Youth Intervention. The host for this show is Darlene Boyd. The guest is Alissa Gleacher.
The Pandemic has had a huge impact on our children’s mental health. A recent report from the US Surgeon General states that symptoms of anxiety and depression in our youth have doubled, with many of our youth experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Some youth groups are harder hit than others. Suicide attempts are higher for adolescent girls than pre-pandemic levels compared to a pre-pandemic lesser increase of suicide attempts in adolescent boys.
The pandemic produces a long-standing widespread loss of normalcy, increase in sedentary behavior, loss of social support, loss of normative childhood activities, increased academic struggle and more. Research also shows our youth’s mental health issues impacting parents’ well – being and job performance. Cognitive behavioral psychologist, Dr. Alissa Gleacher provides insightful coping strategy information for families and a sampling of intervention techniques for individual family members.
