Studying Hawaii From Afar
For several years Professor Patrick Buckley of Huxley College (environmental studies center at Western Washington University) has led student student missions to Hawaii. This year seven undergraduates and one graduate (encompassing sociology, environmental studies, planning, communications) from WWU and Clemson University are exploring issues in economics, culture, and environment in Hawaii, including visits to Hawaii State agencies, Iolani Palace, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Hawaiian fish ponds, and energy entrepreneurs. Ray Tsuchiyama, Student Mission Advisor, seeks how millennial students from the Northwest perceive the impact of tourism in Hawaii, and other topics like sustainability, energy, mass transit, agriculture, and planning. What insights, solutions, and questions will a student group from afar prioritize after studying Hawaii?
