‘Pipe’ Dreams–Race to Transform Toilets (The Creative Life)
Solutions to Global Crises that Stick. The host for this show is Phyllis Blees. The guest is Chelsea Wald.
Science journalist Chelsea Wald, based in the Netherlands with her family, has repeatedly plunged into the topic of toilets since 2013, when editors first approached her to write about the latent potential in our stagnating infrastructure. With a degree in astronomy from Columbia U. and a master’s in journalism from Indiana U., Chelsea has more than 15 years of experience in writing about science & the environment.
Seeing an age-old crisis needing to be solved—sanitation on a global scale—she wrote the book Pipe Dreams: The Urgent Global Quest to Transform the Toilet. It describes innovative, transformative solutions and the obstacles that they face. She analyzes three with us: container-based sanitation in Haiti, a simple septic system in Indonesia, and a urine-diversion toilet in Europe.
