How has patriotism changed in recent years?. Jay Fidell, Stan Osserman and Wescott Lee will talk about what July 4th means this year in particular.
We’re talking about what July 4th means to us these days of national divisiveness and decline. It’s a holiday about the miraculous founding and continuation of the Republic. It’s about patriotism (not nationalism). What are the icons of patriotism this year? Has patriotism changed?
It’s Normandy, it’s the Statue of Liberty, and it’s the difficult introspection we are having on so many delayed issues. In that way it’s the most remarkable and dangerous time in American history (with the exception of the Civil War itself), but the possibility that we will somehow endure and come together is appealing even if unrealistic.
That possibility is clearly the most complex and worthy of thoughtful discussion.
