Hawaii Fashion Month 2015 – Melissa White and Toby Portner
On November 4th during Hawaii Fashion Month, THE MODERN HONOLULU’s Study Hall Lecture Series will showcase AHOLA, a community collection inspired by Hawaii’s history, nature, culture, and diverse population. Residents and visitors are invited to view the collection, meet the designers and discuss issues shaping Hawaii’s present and future.
Worn by a multi-ethnic group of ‘real-people models’ from various Honolulu neighborhoods, the outfits were designed on-site by a group of Hawaii-based creators. Each piece interprets elements of Hawaiian culture into contemporary looks. Through the lens of fashion, the designers collaborated and explored questions of locality and authenticity in Hawaii.
