Trustee Akina has been serving The Office of Hawaiian Affairs as Trustee-At-Large since 2016. He is also the President/CEO of the Grassroot Institute. He and his four children are proud graduates of Kamehameha Schools, where he was the chanter for the school court and went on to be the chanter for the halau of a renowned kumu hula. Dr. Akina has a BA from Northwestern University and a Ph.D in Philosophy and Ethics from UH Manoa and taught ethics and philosophy at HPU and UH Manoa. He began his career in Christian ministry, reaching out to youth in Waianae and Nanakuli, retiring after 31 years as state-wide president for Youth for Christ and founder of the Center for Tomorrowʻs Leaders.
