Finding a Forever Home with Hawaii International Child (HIC)
Hawaii International Child (HIC) works to bring attention to the many older, waiting children in Hawaii and across the U.S. They are specifically always on the look out for local families willing and able to adopt older foster children who are about to age out of the system. These families must be willing and ready to take on the many challenges that come with traumatized children who have been repeatedly let down by the adults in their lives. These children may be unwittingly out to prove to themselves that every adult will let them down, and that their job is to see this through – usually by acting out, running away, rebelling, making dangerous choices, etc.
We’re fortunate to learn more about the process of finding a forever home directly from the Director of Social Work, Abigail Sylvester, and her daughter, Essence Sylvester.
Abby and Essence talk about who some of the kids are, what works for them, what parents can expect, what is required, and how parents can get in touch with us to start the process.
