Ceramic Artist: Gong Xunming
Gong Xunming comes from an area in China renowned for a mountain called “Gaoling.” It is the area where one of the rarest clays is found — the kaolin that is a critical ingredient of the some of the finest porcelains in the world. This area, in Jiangxi Province, has for centuries produced the finest porcelains, the most cherished of which were reserved exclusively for the emperors of China. According to a Chinese poet’s description, this exquisite clay body is said to be “as white as jade, as bright as a mirror, as thin as paper, and to ring like the bell.” It is in this tradition that Gong Shifu has been immersed for more than 30 years. His expertise is both nationally and internationally recognized with his work included in several prominent venues, including the V&A Museum in London.
As an accomplished porcelain painter, Gong uses abstract imagery as the language to express surreal forms. His work bridges a gap between Western aesthetics and Chinese tradition. A pottery and porcelain artist
