In the 1980s Japan was at the zenith of its power and influence. And then came the came the 1990s and a twenty plus year of revolving door prime ministers and a fall in pre-eminence. However, Japan under the leadership of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe seeks to play a more assertive, active role in Asia just at the same time that China seeks to be the premier power in Asia. Dr. Fouse and Bill Sharp examine the type of regional leadership that Japan wishes to play by examining its relationships with other regional powers, the US, and the role that constitutional change can play in asserting Japanese power.
