A Letter from the Sky – Weather Influenced by the Upper Atmosphere
Dr. Kevin Hamilton, Retired Director and Professor of SOEST’s International Pacific
Research Center (IPRC) at the University of Hawaii, and Dr. Takatoshi Sakazaki, a visiting Postdoctoral Fellow at IPRC and Japan Society for Promotion of Science, appear on Research in Manoa to share unexpected new developments in understanding effects of the winds in the upper atmosphere (above about 10 miles height) on the weather at the earth’s surface. We learn about two time scales have been identified of particular interest: a 12-hour period wave that influences the variation of rainfall throughout the tropics, and an approximately two year oscillation in the winds high above the equator that particularly affects winter weather in Europe.
