Data is Power: Decarbonizing Vehicles (Hawaii: State Of Clean Energy)
Better data means better decisions. The host for this episode is Mitch Ewan. The guest for this episode is Troy Wooton.
Given Hawaii’s goal to fully decarbonize our economy no later than 2045, coupled with the fact that the transportation sector constitutes the majority of our energy use, there is an urgent need to develop a comprehensive plan to transition Hawaii to a decarbonized transportation sector. Within transportation, light-duty vehicles (typical passenger car you drive to work) represent a low-hanging fruit in the sense that there are already ample zero emission vehicle (ZEV) models available on the market for consumer purchase. In this presentation, we walk through an analysis of a dataset comprising the registered vehicles in the State of Hawaii’s vehicle fleet, with a focus on answering 1. How many light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are in the fleet? 2. What types of vehicles fall under the light-duty designation? 3. How old are the vehicles in the State Fleet? 4. How can answering these questions better inform a comprehensive plan to efficiently transition the state fleet to ZEVs.
