Do extended breath holds really lead to brain damage? How long can the average human hold their breath? When freedivers purposely ignore their most basic urge for air, there are a lot of questions that get asked. Although freediving has a deep rooted history, this relatively new sport surprises scientists and athletes alike. Research has shown that humans have a diving reflex, or mammalian reflex, that is mostly associated with large aquatic mammals. Additionally, freedivers’ have used techniques from yoga, meditation, and fighter pilots to go beyond the depths ever expected to be humanly possible. The host for this episode is Kara Miller.
