The Pen is Mightier than the Virus (Coronavirus and Our Mental Health)
The Joy of Writing. The host for this show is Ken Burtness. The guest is Penny Pence Smith.
At the beginning of the pandemic, personal contact was severely curtailed and voice contact was made more difficult, but written contact was almost always available. In the quiet of isolation, people could always pick up a pencil or pen, tap on a keyboard and share thoughts and fears and dreams with the important people in their life. Faced with adversity, it was a time to talk of important things, deep feelings, and thoughts; a time to set aside social chit-chat; a time to say things too long unsaid. This talk could be factual past and current events, or imaginative of made-up stories that communicate obliquely and deeply what people want to, need to tell other people. Although restrictions have eased this, deeper communication is still very much needed.
