The Making of Green Island, a New Novel by Shawna Yang Ryan
Shawna Yang Ryan teaches creative writing at the University of Hawaii, and her latest novel Green Island, published by Knopf, will come out next month. The novel is based on Green Island which is a small island off of the southeastern coast of Taiwan and which once housed an infamous prison where those who opposed the Taiwan government were incarcerated. The novel deals a lot with “the era of white terror” which reigned in Taiwan before democratization. She shares its themes and compares her novel to whats portrayed in the movie Formosa Betrayed.
