The Genesis of Dengue and Zika: Protection from Microbial Pathogens with Dr. Vivek R. Nerurkar
With an estimated 390 million new infections per year, the four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV) are the leading cause of infection and disease globally. Currently, no FDA-approved antiviral or vaccine against DENV is available. Dr. Nerurkar has utilized molecular methods to study a wide range of emerging and re-emerging microbial pathogens. He conducts research on the pathogenesis of West Nile virus-associated meningoencephalitis, dengue hemorrhagic fever and pathogenesis of the fatal demyelinating disease, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Senator Green helps us to learn more about how researchers are working to eradicate Dengue and Zika outbreaks.
