The Chemistry of Love (Books! Books! Books!)
Dopamine Determines How and who You Love. The host for this show is Mihaela Stoops. The guest is Kathy Davey.
This discussion is based on the book ‘The Molecule of More: How a Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex and Creativity- and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race’, by Daniel Z. Lieberman, MD and Michael E Long. New advances in neuroscience show us that chemicals in our brains are responsible for our love life, our addictions, and even our political choices. Dopamine is the chemical of anticipation, of future satisfaction, of wanting more. The authors define romance as ‘the dopamine thrill’ that is bound to fade away. At that point, one can either transition to an appreciation of here and now or move on to seek another thrill. Serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins are the ‘here and now’ chemicals that give us emotions and sensations in the present, and they are conducive to long-term relationships.
