An innovative, highly efficient solar still shows great promise to enhance access to potable water, especially for residents of islands.
We’ll discuss the development of Dr. Gan’s simple, robust, inexpensive passive solar still that operates at high efficiency, producing 5 – 10 gallons of fresh water per day from a one square yard footprint. The ingenious design of the stills allows them to be deployed in almost any water source – towed behind a boat, moored in a pond or marsh, set in an open well, etc. – where they convert about 90% of the solar energy received into evaporation, with little wasted heat, and yielding much more fresh water per unit area than earlier still designs. The host for this episode is Ethan Allen. The guests for this episode are Qiaoqiang Gan and Haomin Song.
