Reflections on Justice from Colombia (Transitional Justice)
Lessons learned from Colombia. The host for this episode is Jay Fidell. The guest for this episode is Nicolás Süssmann-Herrán.
In 2016, a peace agreement was signed in Colombia after decades of armed conflict. The transitional justice process began in a deeply divided & polarized society. This created a challenging environment with disinformation, fake news, skepticism, and attacks from radical sectors of society. To be successful, transitional justice must answer the calls for justice by victims & communities harmed by the armed conflict. Institutions and traditional justice are a part of this process, but how to achieve trust in them where society is deeply divided? Several groups’ interests are at stake and shaken by this transitional context. Acknowledging those concerns is important, but how to do it? The Colombian context resembles many of the challenges that the US faces today to achieve social reconciliation. What lessons can be learnt from the Colombian experience? How to replicate the successes while avoiding the mistakes?
