Should Hawaiian Memorial Park Be Permitted to change 31 acres of Kaneohe land classified under the State as “Conservation Land” in Kawa Watershed Region? The project promised mass deforestation, severe grading of area mountains and filling in to accommodate 30,000 additional burial plots at Hawaiian Memorial Park.
Hawaiian Memorial Park has been in operation since 1958. They purchased an additional partial of land from Kaneohe Ranch in 1982. SCI bought HMP cemetery in 1999, knowing it was considered steep and undesirable conservation land for cemetery burial plots. However, 13 years ago, they began an LUC petition to rezone their land. The Land Use Commission denied their petition to expand in 2009, due to the historical, environmental, and scenic value of the area.” However, since 2017, SCI / HMP have been very persistent in seeking a boundary amendment for their property from conservation to urban district. This would allow them to proceed with their proposed development.
