Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in Hawai’i’s soil (Young Talents Making Way)
Determining the best method to isolate and identify NTM in Hawaii’s soil.. Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) includes 90 species of opportunistic pathogens that inhabit drinking water systems, our household plumbing, and soil. Humans are surrounded by this causative agent of debilitating pulmonary lung disease much like tuberculosis. Today, Kyla Kohara joins us to bring awareness on this growing cause of morbidity among adults in the United States and Hawai’i. Our islands have more than 3000 cases every year, the highest number in the United States. Kyla shares some of the results of her science project in which she determined the best method of isolating and identifying NTM in Hawai’i’s soil and where these bacteria can be found.
