Can computers predict weather phenomena? (Young Talents Making Way)
Investigating machine learning capabilities to predict El Niño events on the Pacific.. El Niño is a change in climatic conditions across the tropical Pacific that occurs every 2 to 7 years. It is usually associated with extreme weather events such as drought, hurricanes and floods. Today, James Shigemoto joins us to discuss his science project regarding predicting future El Niño events for the Hawai’i State Science and Engineering Fair. James used a method of Machine Learning known as Deep Learning to attempt to predict weather phenomena that could very well cause disasters allowing and enable governments to prepare for such potential disaster.
