Membering Lahaina, a Look Ahead Vol 7 (Humane Architecture)
Suggestions of Sensitive Sheltering. The hosts for this show are Martin Despang and DeSoto Brown. The guest is Martin Anzellini García-Reyes.
Preceding ‘human[e] architecture’ shows by DeSoto Brown have shared the history and post-fire condition of the town of Lahaina, which has been destroyed by the fire of August 2023. This show continues the previous ones taking a chance on brainstorming potential propositions for suggesting shelters of both temporary to permanent types for survivors who have lost their houses due to the wildfire – increasingly many lose their sheltering due to predator capitalism’s gentrification on all our islands of Hawai’i.
Aware of the prevailing hesitation for proposals because of grief and other reasons, this panels takes a chance to provide hope by making suggestions other than the to-be-expected, well-meant generic disaster relief structures of however hermetic invasive neomissionary nature. In this episode, Columbia-established and emerging Hawai’i architect Martin Anzellini García-Reyes shares his thoughts in these few weeks after the destruction envisioned reemerging.
