HI Student Achievement Lowest Due to Covid (The State of the State of Hawaii)
Reading and Math Learning Steeply Decline. The host for this show is Stephanie Dalton. The guest is Cheri Nakamura.
Guest Cheri Nakamura, Director of Hui for Excellence in Education Coalition (HE’E), discusses Hawaii students’ 2022 reading and mathematics scores from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) known as ‘The Nation’s Report Card.’ These newest results represent the first report with a nationally representative sample of students to measure changes in 9-year-olds’ achievement over the first two years of the disruptions to learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The scores show the largest declines observed in 50 years of the NAEP program. Hawaii’s students in 2022, like those across the nation, are performing at a level last seen two decades ago, including the first decline ever in students’ mathematics scores. Dr. Nakamura discusses what this data and the federal funding provided to the state means to parents, students and teachers in Hawaii’s public schools.
