Hawaii Chess Festival 2015

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa willTeam Up with Women’s World Chess Champion in Charity Chess Match. Mayor Arakawa is headed to the Hilton Waikiki Beach in Honolulu next Wednesday, where he will be teaming up with 21 year-old Women’s World Chess Champion Hou Yifan from China in a unique team chess match for charity.
Mayor Arakawa and the Women’s World Champion will be playing a non-consultation game at the festival’s Charity Banquet on the evening of March 18th, against International Grandmaster Samuel Shankland from California and the winning bidder of the Banquet’s silent auction.
Proceeds from the Charity Banquet will go towards benefiting the scholastic initiatives of the Hawaii Chess Federation (a 501(c)3 non-profit).
Mayor Arakawa, an avid chess enthusiast, will also be making an appearance at the “Hawaii Grandmaster Chess Challenge” on the morning of Friday, March 20th, when he will be making the ceremonial first move. This 4-player invitational event is headlined by the already mentioned International Grandmasters Hou Yifan and Sam Shankland, as well as International Grandmaster Timur Gareev of Nevada, and top Japanese International Master Shinya Kojima.
Both of these events are part of the Inaugural 2015 Hawaii Chess Festival, taking place from March 14th-22nd and centered at the Hilton Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Other events during the Festival include the Hawaii State Scholastic Championships, a “Chess Day at Magic Island”, and an International Open tournament open to players of all ages and abilities.
