Grid-Edge Tech for Renewable Energy (Hawaii: State Of Clean Energy)
Bringing smarts to the electric grid. The host for this episode is Mitch Ewan. The guest for this episode is Kevin Davies, PhD.
As Hawaii continues its march toward 100% renewable energy, the distribution grid will have an ever increasing role in providing intermittent renewable generation and storage. Utilities currently have limited visibility into the condition of the distribution grid and limited ability to coordinate control of behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs) such as rooftop solar PV and home battery energy storage. In this episode, we will first cover some of the key technical challenges limiting further adoption of rooftop PV on the electric grid. Next, we will cover ancillary services that DERs can provide to support grid operation under high penetration of renewable energy. Finally, we will discuss recent progress at the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) in developing and applying a patent-pending device for grid sensing, analytics, and controls.
