Energy Imbalance Markets and Reliability (Perspectives on Energy)
Renewable Variability Managed Through EIMs. The host for this show is Guillermo Sabatier.
One of the most pressing reliability challenges posed by renewable resources is their variability. Besides causing reliability concerns, it also has an impact on economics and real time energy pricing as it may force base load generation to redispatch or even cycle off to accommodate. The Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) serves as a very effective tool to mitigate this concern and offer competitive pricing on energy resources, thus offsetting some of the common issues with base load unit redispatch and cycling. Sounds like a great solution as long as there is space in the interconnect transmission grid, but how far can this be stretched to absorb variability of a larger number of Distributed Energy Resources and rooftop solar installations? What happens to regions that are isolated like ERCOT or even islands like Hawai’i?
