Designing a Road-User Funding System (Hawaii: State Of Clean Energy)
Roads Are NOT Free – Everyone Needs to Pay. The host for this show is Mitch Ewan. The guest is Dallas Ige.
In the US, the fuel tax is the primary source of transportation funding used to build and maintain our roadways. However, it will no longer be a reliable source of funding as it has not kept up with inflation and improved fuel economy, so the gap between needs and revenue continues to widen. As a result, a wide range of alternative revenue systems were explored where a road user charge system based on miles driven emerged as the consensus choice of the future. Since most people are not aware of the current funding problem, nor do they understand how a road user charge system would function, this show explores the concept of a road user charge system, reviews the intended policy goals, identifies major limitations, addresses social equity, and concludes with recommendations to gain public acceptance.
