Career Kickstart, Internships at UH Shidler College of Business (Education Matters)
Getting job experience with school credit and pay. Businesses get head start in finding employees.
Everyone can remember, sometimes painfully, their very first job, their first break in the world of work. Internships make that transition a natural part of a college education. Today, we will explore the gains and advantages of internships for both businesses and students, a few of the internship success stories, and what businesses can do to become more involved. UH Shidler College of Business internship program was not a high priority for the college 20 years ago, placing only about 25 students each semester. In 2000 Marsha Anderson, first as internship director and then as Assistant Dean, was hired by Dean David McClain to build the program. Currently Rick Varley, Director of the Office of Internships and Career Services, now oversees a program of more than 450 internships a year both in Hawaii and internationally. The host for this episode is Carol Mon Lee. The guests for this episode are Marsha Anderson and Rick Varley.
