Mary Mostafanezhad and Eli Litzelman of the University of Hawaii’s Department of Geography, along with Dr. Krisna Suryanata, collaborate on a research project that examines the proliferation of agro-food initiatives (AFIs) in Hawai‘i. Through this research, they ask: How and to what extent do AFI participants contribute to the viability of local agriculture economies in Hawai‘i? Political economic analysis reveals that the structural disadvantages of global agrofood system have rendered Hawai‘i’s plantation agriculture uncompetitive, and have driven many of Hawaii’s independent small farmers out of business. Yet, in spite of the shaky viability of agriculture, interests in AFIs have grown in throughout the state. Tune in today at 4 pm to hear more!
