Life Across the Sea (Law Across The Sea)
Setting Sail for a Life at Sea. John practiced law in Hawaii from 1977 to 1994. His wife, Leilani, was pursuing a career in the health care insurance business. Then, on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1994, John and Leilani set sail for a life on the sea, leaving Hawaii and John’s law practice behind. They sailed out of Kaneohe Bay, turned South, and never looked back. They have sailed around the world following the sunset. John and Leilani now live in Auckland, New Zealand, and continue to sail around the South Pacific, visiting local island villages and making friends across the sea. What motivated this journey? Why leave the legal profession for the uncertainty of the open seas? What happened on their travels? What does law and lawyers have to do with any of this? What has been learned? John will talk with me from his sailing yacht Amazing Grace in Auckland Harbor. John and I will discuss his professional and life experiences and the personal compass that led him across the sea.
