Kabul Airport Exit, Worse than Saigon (What Now America)
Exit Plan to Leave Afghanistan, a Failure. The host for this episode is Tim Apicella. The guests for this episode are Jay Fidell, Winston Welch and Cynthia Lee Sinclair.
On April 29, 1975 the images of helicopters packed full of S. Vietnamese trying to escape the invading N Vietnamese army off the Saigon embassy rooftop was an image that no one ever wanted to see again. A stain on the US reputation for leaving those who closely worked with the US military behind is history. Now fast forward to Kabul to an airport separated by barbed wire. On one side, the military side, an orderly exit of US personnel onto military aircraft. On the other side, the commercial side, a desperate exodus of the Afghans who know of their certain fate from the Taliban if they don’t get a flight out. A heart wrenching chaotic attempt to flee Afghanistan is taking place. Stories of pilots unable to take off due to passenger overload, and refusal of passengers to exit the plane or Afghans falling from the C17 plane’s wheel well back onto the tarmac as the plane rolled down the runway for takeoff and once in flight. Memories and visuals of Saigon, but worse, far worse.
