2021 Legislature Going Into Overtime (Talking Tax)

The Legislature will reconvene on July 6 to consider, amend, and possibly override vetoes by Governor Ige. July 6 is also the deadline by which Gov. Ige must sign or veto any legislation. Bills not signed or vetoed will become law without the Governor’s signature. Bills that have technical problems, such as ones that violate federal law, could possibly be fixed by a floor amendment and then passed on final reading 48 hours afterward. Legislative leaders are now contemplating a session that would last a few days. What is to become of some of the more controversial bills such as the one proposing $2200 bonuses per teacher, the Enola Gay Frankenbill that would suspend GET exemptions and radically hoist the conveyance tax, or the bill that would allow the State to keep all transient accommodations tax money and make the counties enact their own TAT surcharges up to 3%?
