East Asian Modernity after WWII. Postwar intellectuals in East Asia struggled to understand why modernity had failed so terribly in WWII especially in Japan. Two arguments emerged, state-initiated external coercion vs inner cooptation. In China, intellectuals were brutalized during the WWII and reeducated afterward by the CCP, forced to recent western liberal leanings.
