‘The Last Rhinos’ by Lawrence Anthony (World of Books)
Battles to Save World’s Greatest Creatures. The host for this show is Mihaela Stoops. The guest is Maribeth Theisen.
Maribeth Theisen, a Maui psychotherapist that has been fascinated by wildlife since childhood, introduces us to the world of conservation efforts and its challenges, particularly with rhinoceros and cheetahs. Some may roll their eyes at the suggestion to read a book on conservation, but Lawrence Anthony’s book reads like a thriller, with many ups and downs and unexpected situations; one enjoys the descriptions of the natural beauty of Africa, the animals and their connection to humans, as well as the history and political conflicts in several African countries. One learns how to navigate the labyrinth of the bureaucracy related to conservation efforts. But more importantly, one can only be inspired to do more, after reading about the dedication of a small group of people to save the last of a species.
