‘Talk Story’ Enlivens Hawaii Teaching (The State Of The State Of Hawaii)
Teaching Thru Instructional Conversation. The host for this episode is Stephanie Dalton. The guest for this episode is Ronald Gallimore, PhD.
Dr. Gallimore returns to discuss a key development in teaching. Kamehameha School’s laboratory school pioneered the use of student talk practices to teach content and discuss ideas over several decades of operation. Concern about Hawaiian students’ school achievement levels in the 1960s supported development of a program to improve school success for low-achieving students in Hawaii’s public schools. Based on study findings from a Leeward Coast Hawaiian community, suggestions for improving student performance, included increasing the compatibility of schools and classrooms with home settings. One way to increase compatibility was through use of language and speaking conventions that were common in the students’ home. This provided the basis for the strategy known as Instructional Conversation (IC), which not only adopted and accepted home style speech, but also altered typical classroom conventions of hand-raising and turn-taking.
