Senate Agrees on Gun Safety Reform (American Issues Take Two)
Rare GOP and Democrat Cooperation. The host for this show is Tim Apicella. The guest is Stephanie Dalton.
Under intense pressure from voters, the US Senate has come up with an agreement, in principal, to enact gun safety measures not seen in decades from Congress. American’s cries to “do something” in the days after the Uvalde school and Buffalo NY food store shootings have forced the GOP side of the Senate isle to work with Democrats. Although the agreement fails to address critical aspects of gun safety such as assault weapon restrictions, a minimum age of 21 to purchase, and extended background checks, it does make small gains: improvement in “red flag” warning provisions and mental health, as well as domestic violence background checks. The difficult path ahead is to write the agreement in language enough Senators can live with in order to vote it for passage.
